Vermilion’s 111th Fair

Vermilion Voice

Thousands of people flooded the Vermilion Agricultural Grounds from July 27 – 29, taking in a mix of midway, agricultural shows, and entertainment.

The parade kicked off the Fair with a variety of entries categorized in commercial, out of town, senior and junior organizations, comic, pioneer, antique, and decorated cars. People of all ages enjoyed watching the colourful floats pass by, most tailored to the theme celebrating 100 years of 4-H in Alberta.

“I was super-duper excited for the parade,” said six-year-old David Causley.

In the staggering heat, visitors then proceeded to the fair grounds, meandering through trade booths, the bench fair, food vendors, and the midway. Equipment displays, and several livestock shows were of interest to agricultural enthusiasts. Old MacDonald’s Barn and a sand box provided a shaded reprieve for children.

Full grandstands supported the pony chariot and chuckwagon races, as well as musical entertainment from The Hansen Jeans, The Rum Bros., and Velvet Hand. Musical performances by Danielle Marie along with special guest Jordan Aaron kept the crowd dancing in the beer gardens.

High action included the tractor pulls, cowboy mounted shooters, and Knights of Northern Realm. First year competitor, Jill Serepta entered the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Competition, and said, “I love the friendliness and encouragement from other competitors. It is always challenging; the sport is always changing with different patterns.”

Fairgoers had no shortage of interesting events and tried their best to take in their favourites during the three day span. On July 29, a marvelous display of fireworks provided a celebratory close to the small town fair.
