The Vermilion Ukrainian Cultural Association held their 19th Annual Malanka celebration at the Vermilion Regional Centre on January 12. The community enjoyed performances by Samotsvit dancers of all ages, as well as a Ukrainian meal, and dance to follow. Malanka is a Ukrainian word (the name of Mother Earth’s daughter) meaning ‘cute’. It is celebrated each year in combination with Ukrainian New Year’s to represent people looking forward to spring. “We would like to thank everyone for coming out; the support in the community has been amazing! The children and adults are always excited to dance at Malanka,” said committee member, Rhonda Zuk Headon. The evening included a balloon pop for prizes, a 50/50 draw, and a balloon drop at midnight. There was also a skit, and a Kolomanka (a Ukrainian traditional folk dance done in a circle). “The children had lots of smiles; they love being up on the stage. As an adult dancer, it’s always nice to see the smiling faces in the crowd. With the costumes, the music, and the colours it is a wonderful experience to be a part of! We would also like to thank Coleen Hozack for catering; the food was incredible,” said Morgan Wood, Vermilion Ukrainian Cultural Association president.
