On the evening of June 6, Vermilion RCMP and the County Rescue services were called to the scene of a plane crash near the Hamlet of Heinsburg. Emergency crews arrived to find that a small single engine Cessna had landed in a slough between Range Roads 45 and 50.

According to the initial investigation media report from the RCMP, the wing of the plane appears to have hit a tree during its descent to a private airstrip, causing difficulties with the landing.

Upon their arrival, emergency personnel found the single occupant of the plane trapped inside, requiring him to be extracted by Vermilion River County Rescue services. A 65-year-old man from Clandonald, AB was treated in hospital, then airlifted to Edmonton by STARS for continued treatment of serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The Transportation Safety Board will be conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash
