On February 5, Upper Level Pottery and Art Gallery hosted it’s first online art workshop “Birds in Watercolour”, with the instruction of local artist Monica To.

“We decided to do a watercolour class and wanted something nice and light,” said To, “so we chose birds.”

Participants of all ages completed two watercolour paintings in six and a half hours from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. that day. Instructor To would demonstrate on her camera how to do a step and allow time for participants to follow suit, and the Zoom setting allowed for two-way interaction so participants could show their work and receive feedback.

“I have experience teaching students online when classes went digital, but this is the first time I’ve taught adults online,” To explained.

According to To, the reach was far broader than an in-person class would be, with participants from Spruce Grove all the way to Manitoba. Individuals participated from their offices, kitchens, bedrooms, and the like.

“It was really neat to be able to work together and interact even though it was a digital setting,” commented To.

Upper Level Pottery and Art Gallery will be hosting another online workshop with To, “Faces in Pencil” on February 27. For more information, visit Upper Level Pottery and Art Gallery on Facebook, and to register, email UpperLevelGallery@gmail.com or call 780-581-8392.
